Black Streaks on Your Roof in Bradenton, FL: What They Are and How to Fix Them
Those dark streaks are Gloeocapsa magma, an airborne algae (technically a cyanobacterium) that feeds on the limestone filler in roofing materials. They’re mostly cosmetic on tile, but they spread, they draw HOA notices, and the fix is a low-pressure soft wash, not a pressure washer.

The cause
What causes black streaks on Bradenton roofs
Gloeocapsa magma arrives on the wind, lands on roofs and spreads down the slope. It thrives in warm, humid weather, and Bradenton’s wet season from about June 5 to September 25 keeps it supplied with moisture.
Shade and slow drying speed it up. Tree-covered older streets and waterfront roofs with extra moisture and salt in the air tend to streak first.
How serious is it?
Do black streaks damage a roof?
- Tile: the Tile Roofing Institute says dirt, algae and moss don’t affect tile’s ability to protect the structure.
- Shingles: check your manufacturer’s warranty and maintenance guidance.
- Appearance and HOA notices: streaks are a common reason for violation letters.
- They spread: a small streak is easier to clean than a roof that has gone dark.
Not a pressure-wash job
Don’t blast it off
Pressure can crack tile and strip shingle granules. Low-pressure soft washing with a cleaning solution treats the growth without that damage.
Slowing it down
Ways to slow regrowth
Cut back shade
Trimming overhanging branches lets the roof dry faster.
Keep gutters clear
Standing water and debris at the roof edge hold moisture.
Clean on a schedule
Regular soft washing is easier than restoring a roof that has gone dark.
Ask a roofer about metal strips
Some homeowners install zinc or copper strips near the ridge to discourage growth. Effectiveness varies.

FAQ
Black streak questions
Is it mold?
It’s usually Gloeocapsa magma, an algae-like cyanobacterium. Dark spots can also be mildew or lichen, and we’ll identify what you have.
Will the streaks come back?
Over time, yes, since spores keep arriving. Shade and moisture speed it up.
Will cleaning damage my roof?
Not when done with low pressure and the right solution.
Do streaks mean my roof needs replacing?
Not by themselves. Cracked, loose or worn roofing is a separate issue a roofer should assess.
